Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that causes pain, stiffness, swelling and loss of function in the small joints in the hands and feet. This chronic inflammation occurs when the immune system mistakenly starts attacking healthy tissue in the joints.
This leads to swelling in the joints, making them progressively less mobile. If not managed properly, over time, RA can result in permanent joint damage.
